A “Hatto” for Young Advertising Film from FABW
The stop-motion film WHAT WAS I MADE FOR? has won the award for Best Young Advertising Film at the German Advertising Film Award 2025. Director Anja Giele accepted the “Hatto” on March 28 in Hamburg.
The winning film humorously addresses topics such as sustainability and food waste, telling the story of a pea pod named Stevie striving for perfection.
The German Advertising Film Award is presented by the German Advertising Film Academy and honors outstanding creative achievements in the advertising film industry.

German Camera Awards 2025: Nominations for FABW students and alumni
FABW cinematography students Paul Ader and Jona Riese are among the 30 nominees for the 35th German Camera Award.
Filmakademie graguates Yunus Roy Imer (cinematography), Stephan Bechinger and Anna Nekarda (editing) are also in the running for a trophy.
The prizes will be awarded on June 13, 2025 at a festive awards ceremony at the WDR Funkhaus in Cologne.
Symposium INPUT <> OUTPUT – Impulses, Exchange, Story Market
Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg is pleased to announce the two-day symposium INPUT <> OUTPUT – Impulses, Exchange, Story Market, which will take place on Monday, April 7, and Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at FABW.
This event combines a keynote session (Input) with a pitch market (Output) for industry professionals, students, and alumni. At its core, the symposium fosters an exchange between technology and film.
The symposium will be hosted by Gerhard Maier, artistic director of the renowned Seriencamp Festival & Conference, an annual event held since 2015.
German Film Awards 2025: Three nominations for FABW diploma film "VENA"
The FABW graduation film VENA has been nominated in three categories for the 75th German Film Awards. The feature film has been shortlisted in the categories Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Female Lead.
In addition, four Filmakademie graduates are in the running for a “LOLA” in various categories.
The awards will be presented in Berlin on May 9.
FABW diploma film wins in the category “Children & Youth”
The graduate documentary SISTERQUEENS by FABW student Clara Stella Hüneke (writer and director) has won at the 61st Grimme Awards an award in the category “Children & Youth”. The film follows three girls in a rap project in Berlin-Wedding who creatively question topics such as self-determination and feminism in their lyrics.
The award ceremony will take place on April 4 in Marl.
Young Voices for a New Era!
The film workshop "Generation Übermorgen" in Ludwigsburg enables young people from less privileged backgrounds to tell their stories through film. Under the guidance of Filmakademie students and filmmakers, pupils from Ludwigsburg's Gemeinschaftsschule develop their own short film and take on various roles. The project promotes diversity and provides children with migration backgrounds a creative platform to express their voices. The workshop concludes with a final presentation at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.
FABW Graduation Film Wins Special Jury Award in Rotterdam
The graduation film IM HAUS MEINER ELTERN by Tim Ellrich has won the Special Jury Award in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). The black-and-white family drama tells the story of spiritual healer Holle, who takes care of her family and faces resistance as she seeks change.
The film was produced at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and was the only German entry in the competition. The jury praised it as an "intimately observed film." The Tiger Competition at the IFFR aims to support emerging international film talents.
75th Berlinale: DEFA Foundation's Heiner Carow Prize goes to FABW graduate Philipp Döring
On February 22, 2025, the Heiner Carow Prize of the DEFA Foundation, endowed with 5,000 euros, was awarded for the twelfth time at the 75th Berlinale. This year, a three-member jury awarded documentary film director and Filmakademie graduate Philipp Döring for his film PALLIATIVSTATION. The touching film celebrated its world premiere in the festival program in the “Forum” section.
FABW graduate Johannes Naber is the winner
This year's Thomas Strittmatter Award from the Medien- Filmgesellschaft Baden-Wuerttemberg (MFG) goes to the screenplay “Wachen” by FABW graduate Johannes Naber. The prize, worth 20,000 euros, was awarded last Wednesday, February 19, at the Berlinale.
The award was presented to Johannes Naber by Arne Braun, State Secretary at the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts Baden-Württemberg, and MFG managing director Carl Bergengruen at the permanent representation of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg in Berlin. Actor Sebastian Blomberg then read excerpts from the script.
