German Camera Awards 2025: Nominations for FABW students and alumni

Award ceremony on June 13th in Cologne

On Thursday, March 20, 2025, the nominations for the 35th German Camera Awards were announced, which honors outstanding achievements by cinematographers and editors. Among the 30 nominees are two students and three alumni of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.

In the category Short Film, the jury selected, among others, Paul Ader* as DoP of the Filmakademie production HAUS AM HANG. The film was made in the second year of studies and is set in a facility for young offenders where physical labour and uncompromising hierarchical structures prevail. There, inmate Jurek develops an ambivalent relationship with newcomer Sascha that jeopardizes his release.

In the section Newcomer Award, Jona Riese can hope for an award for his cinetography of the film UNHCR – THROUGH MY EYES, which he realized as an external project with the participation of several Filmakademie students.

Several alumni of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg are also in the running for an award: in the category Fiction Cinema, the drama THE OUTRUN (director: Nora Fingscheidt) convinced the jury twice over: both DoP Yunus Roy Imer and film editor Stephan Bechinger received nominations.

Last but not least, FABW alumna Anna Nekarda is in the running for a German Camera Award in the Fiction Screen category for her work as a editor on the crime drama WER OHNE SCHULD IST (WHO IS WITHOUT GUILT).

The German Camera Award has been recognizing outstanding achievements in cinematography and editing since 1982 and is one of the most important awards in the industry in the German-speaking world. The winners will be honored at a festive award ceremony at the WDR Funkhaus in Cologne under the auspices of WDR on June 13, 2025.

Paul Ader is a scholarship holder of the foundation Baden-Württemberg Stiftung and participated in an international partner programme as part of his studies.
