MIRADAS CRUZADAS - Film workshop combines perspectives from Baden-Wuerttemberg and Chile
The third and final round of the international film workshop MIRADAS CRUZADAS (crossed gazes) begins on 17 December 2024. The project brings together students from the Universidad de Valparaiso in Chile and the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg (FABW). Together, wit the means of documentary film, they are exploring life in the cities of Valparaiso and Stuttgart.
The BWS plus project ‘MIRADAS CRUZADAS’ is being carried out by the Baden-Wuerttemberg Foundation as part of the ‘Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM for University Cooperation - BWS plus’ programme. The three-year initiative is being supported with funding totalling 98,000 euros.
The programme kicks off with a three-day online seminar with students and lecturers from Chile and Germany. The project, led by Filmakademie graduate Valentina Boye, will focus on the topic of ‘Urban city symphonies in film’. During the seminar, participants will be familiarised with cinematic role models such as BERLIN - THE SINFONY OF THE CITY by Walter Ruttmann, A VALPARAÍSO by Joris Ivens and SINFONY OF A CITY by FABW director Thomas Schadt. Four student films have already been produced as part of the project, which will also be presented and discussed during the kick-off.
In the further course of the workshop, two groups of three students each will explore and take a closer look at the people, landscapes and architecture of the cities of Stuttgart and Valparaíso in their own short films. In keeping with the motto MIRADAS CRUZADAS, students from Ludwigsburg will film in Valparaíso - and vice versa.
Guido Lukoschek, Head of the International Office at FABW, is delighted with the opportunities for cultural exchange: ‘As the large number of 12 applications for just three places shows, the project is very popular with our students. And rightly so, because MIRADAS CRUZADAS opens up unique opportunities for participants from both sides to gain a deep insight into the (film) culture of the respective host country. Personal encounters between the two student groups create space for critical reflection on their own perspectives. In the internationally oriented degree programme at the Film Academy, such discussions are among the central teaching content. Thanks to the support of the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung, we can offer students these great opportunities.’
