NOTE ON PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

A certain amount of previous practical experience within the film and media industry is very important and a prerequisite for admission in accordance with our examination regulations. The programme at the FABW builds on this previous experience.

You can gain this practical experience at broadcasters, production companies, editorial offices, publishing houses, agencies, but also at the theatre, to name just a few examples. Please ask potential employers for so-called "orientation internships".

Applicants for the undergraduate degree programme must be able to provide written proof of at least 6 months of practical experience by the application deadline in mid-February, and a total of 12 months by the potential start of the degree programme.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE APPLICATION

How often can I apply?

You can apply to the Filmakademie a total of three times.

Can I apply for several degree programmes or specialisations at the same time?

No, this is not possible.

Can I apply directly for a project programme without completing the foundation course?

In principle, it is possible to join the graduate programme if you have the relevant prior knowledge. Applicants must have completed a first degree in a related discipline or alternatively have sound professional experience in the film and media industry.

When applying for one of the eight postgraduate diploma courses, applicants must have completed a corresponding previous degree in a related discipline.
Example: Production design - previous studies in architecture, if applicable.

Is the Abitur a prerequisite for applying?

In principle, yes. However, if you do not have a general higher education entrance qualification/Abitur, you have the option of gaining access to the course of studies via the so-called aptitude test in accordance with Section 10 of our admission examination regulations.

As part of the aptitude test, these applicants will have an extended interview with the examination board regarding subject-specific and general knowledge in relation to the intended course of studies/study focus.

Can the work sample be longer than stated in the application form?

We ask you to adhere to the above-mentioned guidelines. In order to ensure equal opportunities for all applicants, we cannot guarantee that longer work samples will be considered.

Can I only apply for the winter semester?

The application deadline each year is always 15 February. The course of studies then begins in the winter semester, usually in mid/end September.

Is there a numerus clausus (NC)?

The average grade of the A-levels (Abitur) does not play a role for us. In fact, the focus is on practical experience in the media sector, but this may only be gained after the A-levels.

German citizenship - foreign university entrance qualification (HZB)?

Applicants with German citizenship must submit their foreign educational certificates to the Baden-Württemberg Regional Council for recognition of equivalence:

https://rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de/rps/abt7/zeugnisanerkennungsstelle/

When is the application period?

The online application portal opens at the end of December. The application deadline is always 15 February.

Are there any thematic requirements for the work sample to be submitted?

No, there are no thematic specifications for your work sample - with the exception of the screenplay application (see the screenplay department page).

Are there examples of work samples / samples / preparation courses?

No.

Is there an age limit?

No, there is no set age limit. The average age of our first-year students is around 23.

How does the admission procedure work?

Once your application has been received, it goes through a so-called formal review. This is followed by pre-selection by a selected examination committee of senior lecturers. Submitted documents and work samples are intensively scrutinised and evaluated. If the pre-selection is successful, the applicants will receive an invitation to the further entrance examination on site. This is where the individual interviews with the senior lecturers of the respective department take place, where the examination task is issued and the final interview takes place during the colloquium. Applicants usually receive notification within 8-10 days as to whether they have been admitted to the course of studies.
