Nominations for the 61st Grimme Award
FABW Documentary SISTERQUEENS in the Running for a Grimme Award 2025
The Grimme Institute in Marl has announced the nominations for the 61st Grimme Award. Among the 64 productions and individual achievements selected from over 700 submissions is the diploma documentary film SISTERQUEENS, created at Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg. Representing the film team, director and writer Clara Stella Hüneke received a nomination in the "Children and Youth" competition.
The film follows three friends - Jamila (9), Rachel (11), and Faseeha (12) - over four years as they participate in the rap project SISTERQUEENS in Berlin-Wedding. In their lyrics, the girls address societal topics such as self-determination, social justice, and feminism, redefining these themes in their own way.
At the heart of the film lies the question of how young people challenge societal norms. Faseeha reflects on the boundaries of artistic expression, Rachel explores the meaning of self-determination, and Jamila questions the role of the police. With humour and thoughtfulness, the three friends craft rap verses that criticise societal conventions and redefine feminism in their unique way.
The production has already received the Young Eyes Film Award at the 66th edition of DOK Leipzig and will be released in cinemas on 6 March 2025.
Çiğdem Uzunoğlu, the new managing director of the Grimme Institute, highlighted the socio-political relevance of this year’s nominations in the institute’s press release, particularly on topics such as migration and displacement, right-wing extremism, classism, and social inequality.
The Grimme Award, one of Germany’s most prestigious honours for television productions, has been presented annually in Marl since 1964. From 25 January, the juries will convene to decide on the 16 Grimme Awards, as well as the prizes from the Marler Group and the student jury. The winners will be announced on 6 March.
