Exclusive Screening of YUMI - THE WHOLE WORLD at the United Nations in New York

Diploma Documentary Film YUMI – THE WHOLE WORLD

As part of its international activities, Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg is presenting the diploma documentary YUMI – THE WHOLE WORLD in an exclusive screening at the United Nations (UN) in New York. Following a successful internal screening at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on 19 September 2024, the film will be showcased once again to a wider audience in New York on 23 October 2024. This event is held in collaboration with the German UN representation and the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. The aim of the film screening at the UN is to provide a forum for discussions between member states and civil society.

The film, produced by MSZ // Production & Consulting in collaboration with Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg, highlights the brave efforts of three young law students, Solomon Yeo, Vishal Prasad, and Romabeth Siri, who embark from the University of the South Pacific to bring the fight against climate change to the global stage. Their goal: to bring the issue before the International Court of Justice in order to achieve a globally binding definition of obligations in relation to the climate crisis—an historic step in international climate protection.

YUMI – THE WHOLE WORLD follows the three protagonists on their journey from humble beginnings in a university room on the Pacific Islands to negotiations with ministers, ambassadors, and commissioners. The three students are fighting for the protection of their home islands, which are severely threatened by rising sea levels. The name of the film, YUMI, means "we" in Bislama, the official language of Vanuatu, symbolising the collective struggle of Pacific nations against the climate crisis.

The official broadcast date for YUMI – THE WHOLE WORLD is scheduled for 21 November 2024 on SWR (subject to change).

Director Felix Golenko has been nominated for the German Human Rights Film Prize 2024 for his directorial work. Producer Maximilian Köhler received a nomination for the No Fear Award at this year’s First Steps Awards.
