Zwischenheimat – starting April 19 at MIK Ludwigsburg
With the exhibition “Zwischenheimat. Photography by Thomas Schadt”, the Ludwigsburg Museum and the Kunstverein Ludwigsburg honor the outgoing Director of the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, who has gained national and international recognition as a photographer and documentary filmmaker. The special exhibition will be on display from April 19 to June 15, 2025, at MIK, offering a comprehensive portrait of his artistic oeuvre.
Prof. Thomas Schadt, who has guided the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg as its Director since 2005, has shaped a whole generation of filmmakers with his commitment and visionary leadership. Under his direction, the academy evolved into an internationally renowned center for film and media, distinguished by its innovation and artistic excellence. Beyond his accomplishments as a Director, Schadt has built an impressive career as a director, cinematographer, and photographer. This exhibition marks a return to the roots of his creative journey.
The showcase features a broad range of his photographic works, spanning classic street photography, essayistic-serial approaches, and meticulously staged color photo tableaux. The photo series “Germany Always and Everywhere,” “Under the Big Sky,” and “Home” reflect Schadt’s perspective on societal realities, urban spaces, and personal stories.
Another highlight of the exhibition is the close interplay between Schadt’s photographic and cinematic works. Excerpts from his award-winning documentaries, including “Unterwegs nach immer und überall” (On the Way to Always and Everywhere), “Das Magazin der Bilder” (The Magazine of Images), “Die vergessene Stadt – Butte, Montana” (The Forgotten City – Butte, Montana), “Das Gefühl des Augenblicks” (The Feeling of the Moment), and “Berlin: Symphony of a Great City” will be showcased. These cinematic works complement and contrast the photographic exhibits, creating a layered and multidimensional portrait of Schadt’s artistry.
The exhibition at MIK Ludwigsburg is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Additionally, the photographic works and films will remain on display at the Ludwigsburg Museum until June 22, 2025.
With “Zwischenheimat,” the Ludwigsburg Museum invites audiences to deeply engage with Thomas Schadt’s photographic and cinematic creations. The exhibition pays homage to a multifaceted artist who has captured societal realities and urban spaces with a distinctive vision.
